Working mostly with English timbers, Don White produces pieces with uncluttered forms which emphasise the natural beauty found in burr and spalted wood and are sometimes enhanced with carving, texturing and colour. He particularly enjoys the challenge of turning thin-walled bowls from ‘wet’ wood which, when dry, takes on a sculptural free-form quality and sometimes so thin as to be translucent.
Like many true craftsmen he believes that there is no substitute for the discipline of repetition work to hone one’s skills enabling the natural progression to more advanced individual work.
Don regards himself as a “jobbing turner” and will tackle any project that is within the capacity of his lathes and ability. He is always glad to talk about commissions for special pieces, perhaps for presentations. He also runs courses in his own workshop at Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced level. If you would like to talk about a commission or a woodturning course we shall be glad to put you in touch.
