Celebrating the landscape of Dartmoor through photography.
Carol Ballenger's book presents to the viewer vivid new insights into familiar scenes. By viewing fragments of the natural world, set against breathtaking widescreen panoramas of the landscape, we are drawn into the secrets of her 'Stone Universe'
Her photographs are representations of the spirit and magic of Dartmoor. The book explores cloud-shifts, clitter-strewn slopes, windblown fauna, moor stones, and the phases of the day and the moon, shadows, nature's patterns and textures.
Carol works in the landscape, both rural and urban, and produces archival quality, signed, limited edition photographs in her studio. She has exhibited widely and is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society. She sees her work as meditations on the landscape. She thinks that, as well as documenting the world, photography reflects our moods and our relationship to what is photographed. Her work is often about colour and she uses colour as an element of expression in its own right to emphasise the character of the image.
Carol feels that her background in conventional photography has enabled her to make the most of digital technology by translating the skills of darkroom technique to the new medium. For the past four years she has been working with a digital camera. Her panoramas are made by digitally joining six separate photographs resulting in a view of approximately 180°. The high resolution achieved by this method ensures fine detail.
