Devon Guild Of Craftsmen John Maltby Exhibition Catalogue
John is recognised as one of the country’s finest ceramic artists, his figures and creatures holding a wit and profundity that reflect the human condition and are inextricably linked to the English landscape and experience.
John concentrates on making individual pots. His current work is usually slab-built, finished with reduction-fired stoneware glazes and sometimes enamels. He draws a major source of inspiration from the geographic and atmospheric conditions of our island – the small fishing villages of the south-west peninsula, the wide and open skies of East Anglia around Aldeburgh and Snape, the church at Blytheburgh and the great cathedral at Wells. He finds that such places continually change under the patterns of weather – and indeed from year to year – and provide a constantly renewable source of inspiration.
