John Leach, grandson of Bernard Leach and son of David, continues the family tradition in his own pottery set in idyllic surroundings on the edge of the ancient Somerset Levels village of Muchelney, near Langport.
For over 30 years John has established an international reputation for his hand-thrown kitchen pots based on the strength of English stoneware country pottery. He now makes more than sixty designs of everyday tableware from jugs and bowls to casseroles and plates, ideally suited for oven-to-table cooking and safe in microwave cookers and dishwashers. These pots are glazed on the inside and their natural unglazed exteriors glow warmly with the distinctive flame markings of the wood-fired kiln which John built in 1965 to a traditional Japanese design. In 1998 he completed work, building a new much-enlarged three-chambered kiln of 350 cubic feet. Firing the kiln is always a time of great anticipation and excitement: long hours of carefully-regulated stoking.
